Will Not Get Fooled [OG 1980's recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

about

A never completed, very rough run through of ‘Will Not Get Fooled’. Although “Will Not Get Fooled” (sometimes called “Won’t Get Fooled”) would become one of The Palisades most popular early tunes, at this stage the song sounds unfinished and tentative. It might have been a new song we were learning at this very early stage of the band’s existence. The band would eventually speed the song up considerably.

Although I was forced to use scratch vocals on a few of our other songs, because no true final lead vocal was recorded, at least those were raw, but had some energy. ‘Will Not Get Fooled’s’ original lead was definitely a scratch’ and throughout’ I’m annoyingly blasé and unemotional with my phrasing, to the point I forget the words, and fuddle through the bridge, like I’m suffering through a severe bout of narcolepsy. Since it was impossible to eradicate the problems unless I recorded a “new” lead vocal, I had to be content with simply alleviating them. The lead vocal was definitely a problem. Besides being lazy, it was terribly thin and nasal, and what to do about the botched bridge?

I decided to double the lead. I did my best “Young Lear” imitation, and tried to eliminate as much of the deep end in my voice as possible, while also exaggerating the nasal qualities to near buffoon like quality. I put the new vocal behind “Young Lear”, and lo and behold, it simply sounded like a double, helping the performance out considerably. Since there was nothing to double on the bridge I simply did two takes of the imitation “Young Lear” – a new lead and its double. Can you tell when the real Young Lear comes back in? I’m not telling.

After the lead was embellished I simply recorded the back ups, mixed, and mastered. Yeah, it’s not great but I think it is listenable now… I think.

lyrics

I see you giving her a passing eye

Don't want to bring you down, buy I can't lie

I'm not trying to pull a fast one or two

I'm just giving this advice to you

That you - better watch just what you do I'm telling you now

So that you - too will not get fooled

By the same woman who once held me for so long, yeah

And who would never let me down

I'm telling you now...

So that you - will not get fooled

So that you - will not get fooled

I never knew it but I lost control

She said goodbye, I felt my heart explode

I know you want what all the others want too

But I'm giving this advice to you

(Chorus)

I'm telling you once, I telling you twice

Try too hard, you must pay the price

I held on to her as tight as I can

But she slipped through my arms like sand

And I can't say enough

For she was someone who I once loved...

(Chorus)

I see on you a non-believer's smile

Mark what I say, I'll stand on file

I paid the price, but it's up to you

And I'm giving this advice to you

about

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
