The Back Of My Car [Re-recording]

about

To me the 1980’s were the absolute nadir in terms of quality of music. Sure, there were some inspiring good bands that came out of the decade, but between those two pillars of mediocrity, New Wave techno and big hair metal, they were certainly far and between – in my humble opinion. The energy and rebellion that had first erupted from punk/New Wave in the late ‘70’s had dissipated to a generic soulless synthesizer form of music which former renegade indie radio stations like KROQ exploited to my consternation.

I thought I was getting old (at 22!) and losing touch with what was “hip” because I didn’t like the music. With hindsight of course, I realize I was not really so out of touch. The new music was just generally, for the most part, pretty weak, and time has not been very kind to either genre. Anyway, no artist is an island, and unable to stem the tide of contemporary sounds, and being even less inspired by metal, I thought I would write a commercial KROQ “sex” song for fun and possible profit. By keeping with the KROQ formula of extremely stupid lyrics about sex and soulless synthesizer techno music I was ruminating about going into a 24 track studio with a bunch of synthesizers and making my own crap hit single.

Luckily, I never took the idea any further than writing the song, and because it was written on guitar, it’s almost impossible to hear the original “techno” idea. Funny enough, it’s a surprisingly really good song – done Palisades style. The lyrics of frustration were heavily inspired from the Cheap Trick song ‘Come on, Come on’. I especially like the Beach Boys -like closing vocal coda. The melodic guitars are very nice too.

lyrics

We got a good thing going

Now why go ruin it now?

I’ve been waiting all night

Now don’t you go ruin it now

C’mon baby, you know I wouldn’t do it to you

So why frustrate honey when I’m in the mood

I’m not asking for promises, the moon, or the stars

All I want to do is make love to you

In the back of my car, in the back of my car

I want to borrow your body

I want to look into your big green eyes

Woah, little girl

You got to show me that you want to be mine

C’mon baby, you know I wouldn’t do it to you

So why frustrate honey when I’m in the mood

I’m not asking for promises, the moon, or the stars

All I want to do is make love to you

In the back of my car, in the back of my car

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
