Stepping Stone [OG 1980's recording]

‘Stepping Stone’ is our second song to feature “the pros”. Though “Lies” was finished, yet never mixed, when it was suddenly abandoned, work on “Stepping Stone” was terminated after just the basic tracks were laid.

Although unmixed, unlike “Lies”, “Stepping Stone” at least has some power, but obviously we were still unhappy. Without Danny and Larry, it just didn’t sound like the Palisades. This thrown together end of the night mix, is the only version I had that featured a vocal – an overdubbed scratch vocal.

I recorded my scratch vocal in the control booth, and you can hear some slight feedback coming off the monitors in parts. Though unintended, the nicely distorted vocal is almost ten years ahead of its time. It would not be until the early nineties that rock bands would begin distorting the lead vocal on records.

Although in 1996 I discovered the multi-track of ‘Lies’, no multi-track of ‘Stepping Stone’ was uncovered, despite the fact that both songs were from the same session.
