Something In Her Heart [Re-recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

Nearly ten years before Sublime brought ska and reggae into the rock mainstream, the Palisades, mostly through our bassist Dan Black, incorporated it into our power pop sound. Danny just LOVED reggae and ska. Danny’s ultra cool snaky bass comes to the fore in the verses, giving it a very South Bay reggae-like feel against JD’s guitar stabs, and Spinky’s rather unusual drum pattern, until they come together on the big open chord rock chorus. Using Springsteen-like lyrical imagery, JD wrote “Something in Her Heart” about a beautiful Asian girl he worked with who apparently was quietly attracted to him (and he to her) but unfortunately… she was engaged. That’s where you get the lines about “there’s something in her heart, reflected in her eyes, each time that she looks at me”. The agony of what might have been.

‘Something in Her Heart’ was a fun song to perform and kids loved dancing to it. The entire band put in their creativity in parts. I enjoy the whispered vocals on the chorus which give the song a ghostly mysterious vibe.

lyrics

A painted picture hangs from the wall

Slightly tilted it will never fall

She touches her hair and heads out the door

Somewhat confused to what she's living for

He tosses and he turns

Finds his way into his car

Work is a way to keep his visions alive

Though he knows he'll never go that far

There is something in her heart

Reflected through her eyes

Each time that she looks at me

Look at me

She'll be married on a Sunday afternoon

And back to work before it's to soon

They'll lead a happy life with a family

She'll try to dismiss these feelings I see

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
