Old Enough To Know Better [Re-recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

Probably the best of the Schwarze/Deely originals to have never been performed live during the Palisades two year run. I have no reason to offer as to why I never brought ‘Old Enough To Know Better’, with its sophisticated romantic lyrics, nice chord changes, and strong accessible melody, to the band. We just had so many great tunes! ‘Old Enough to Know Better’, heavy on sex, romance, and the ocean boardwalk, concerns a young couple about to make love for the first time. Some great surf guitars on this one.

I love the lyric:

‘Tonight here nothing else matters,

I love you like you were my God

She pulls him close to her soft breast,

Her body wet in the fog’

lyrics

And all around they go driving and settle on a place icy dark

He tells Diane who is waiting, he doesn’t know where he should start

Tonight here nothing else matters, his body will take hers to spend

They park down by lazy water, in the chill of the night they begin

You’re old enough to know better

You’re old enough to beware

You’re old enough to know better

But young enough not to care

The wind rushes by in wild torrents, drowning a young couple’s moans

With skin on skin wild eyes glisten, down by the sacred stone

Tonight here nothing else matters, I love you like you were my God

She pulls him close to her soft breast, her body wet in the fog

You’re old enough to know better

You’re old enough to beware

You’re old enough to know better

But young enough not to care

He takes her cold hand by the boardwalk and they cruise down by the arcade

He pulls out a smoke and he jacks it, the next moment he will be saved

Down by the main music’s playing but he’s not in the mood for a dance

Let’s go away my sweet angel for I’m in the mood for romance

about

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
