Nowhere To Unwind [Re-recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

Written in 1979 (when I was 19) with Rick Humbert. Rick wrote the music for the verse and chorus, and I put my words and melody to it. When the bridge was later added, the procedure was reversed – I worked out the lyrics/ melody first and Rick found the chords for it.

“Nowhere To Unwind” was/is one of my favorite early songs and so it was natural that I brought it to the band’s attention sometime in late ‘82. The Palisades, as usual, pumped up the energy and it became a staple of our live shows in 1983. I used to really feel the heartfelt lyrics when performing it live and would shout the “ain’t gonna be no…” with particular vengeance. A song written about the struggles of playing music before I really knew what I was talking about. By the time “Nowhere to Unwind” was being performed with the Palisades I now understood what my lyrics meant..

lyrics

I was drawn to the darkness as I walked down the line

And every movement of the city life said “you’re out of time”

People talk of heaven, it’s all in their minds

It’s fantasy fetching, I’d reach for it too

But nowadays heaven is so hard to find

Nowhere to unwind

Nowhere to unwind

My father used to tell me “get a good job and you’ll do fine

That guitar will only get you a life in the unemployment line”

He don’t understand, I’m not that kind

Wasn’t born to be a doctor, wasn’t born to fit in

Wasn’t born to follow the sheep into the lion’s den

Nowhere to unwind

Nowhere to unwind

Oh a place like this it melts your mind

Makes your blood run cold makes your eyes go blind

You run around aimlessly, searching for truth and honesty

But it’s just a pointless search

Just some way to unearth a tide of loneliness that follows you

It has a hold of you, are you going to give in?

No!

Nowhere to unwind

Nowhere to unwind

I’m just a lonely boy finding it hard to keep up the pace

I only believe in me and what lies inside that guitar case

You say I’m a loser, OK that’s what I’ll be

But you can’t change my hopes, you can’t change my dreams

And you can’t keep me from being me

Nowhere to unwind - ain’t gonna be no doctor!

Nowhere to unwind ain’t gonna be no lawyer!

Nowhere to unwind ain’t gonna be no soldier!

Nowhere to unwind ain’t gonna be no failure!

about

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
