Lies [Re-recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

“Lies” was likely the most popular of all Palisades originals. I had written the song originally with David McMorris, who for a month at the very formation of the band, was our second guitarist. I think JD may have been on the east coast when this was written in early 1982. It’s kind of a cross between The Cars “My Best Friend’s Girl” and the 50’s song “Heart and Soul”. David began jamming on the verse chords and I just jumped in with some nonsensical ad-lib lyrics and this spontaneous melody -complete with the “ooo girl” hook.

Once Dave left the band, JD elaborated on opening riff, making it his own, while also coming up with an entire new set of chords for the bridge, with the final chord, where the word “Lies” is held in three part, being especially nice. Joel also introduces, for the first time, the Keith Richards/Chuck Berry type of double finger solo, that JD would make a trademark of his, and which he would add (in many variations) to many of our songs for added energy.

lyrics

I know what you’ve been telling me’s all lies

When something’s wrong it’s in your eyes

I stay awake all night long

C’mon c’mon

Ooooo girl

Ooooo girl

Why do you tell me lies?

You told me, you told me lies you’ve been holding out

Information I should know about

I stay awake all night long

C’mon c’mon

Ooooo girl

Ooooo girl

Why you telling me…

Why you telling me…

Why do you tell me lies?

So hold on and hold tight cause I’m coming on

And don’t you fight

Cause I’m too strong

I stay awake all night long

C’mon c’mon

Ooooo girl

Ooooo girl

Why you telling me…

Why you telling me…

Why do you tell me lies?

about

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
