Lies [OG 1980's recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

No doubt due to Bill’s coaxing, JD and I recorded this very tepid and uninspired version of ‘Lies’, NOT with Danny and Larry, but with some local studio pros. Bill was always harping on JD and I that our teenage rhythm section just wasn’t cutting it in the studio. Looking back, I vehemently disagree. Danny and Larry may not have hit “professional” stride yet, but they were well on their way. I certainly would have preferred a garagy driving Palisades than this laborious sludge. Granted, the pros were much tighter, and achieved better sounds in the studio, but they sorely lacked the energy that was such a key component of the Palisades sound.

At some point, JD and I abruptly canned it as being too dead, and a weak representation of the band’s spirited sound. Unfortunately, we never re-recorded the song with Danny and Larry, and this version of “Lies’ became yet another song, though pretty much complete, to be left abandoned, unmixed and eventually forgotten. Though I’m glad the multi-track of “Lies” was rediscovered, and therefore could be mixed, I would have much preferred finding the tracks that featured the “real” Palisades, for which no multi tracks were found.

lyrics

I know what you’ve been telling me’s all lies

When something’s wrong it’s in your eyes

I stay awake all night long

C’mon c’mon

Ooooo girl

Ooooo girl

Why do you tell me lies?

You told me, you told me lies you’ve been holding out

Information I should know about

I stay awake all night long

C’mon c’mon

Ooooo girl

Ooooo girl

Why you telling me…

Why you telling me…

Why do you tell me lies?

So hold on and hold tight cause I’m coming on

And don’t you fight

Cause I’m too strong

I stay awake all night long

C’mon c’mon

Ooooo girl

Ooooo girl

Why you telling me…

Why you telling me…

Why do you tell me lies?

about

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
