Let The Young Live [OG 1980's recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

Some called this the greatest of all Palisades songs, though perhaps not the best – if that makes any sense. “Let The Young Live” epitomizes the youth sound of the Palisades (and the early eighties South Bay youth culture). It’s all encapsulated here as the quintessential expression of the Palisades sound, from the onset of the crash of the first “bomb”, to the big tom opening, to the driving rhythm, rebellious lyrics, and anthem chorus, until its dramatic double guitar lead and jamming conclusion. And all this energy with a nearly non-existent snare! Bill!!!!

Truly, a classic example of teenage rebellion and a great musical snapshot of youth, and of a time now long gone. Though recorded in a single day, at least this song was truly completed. Unfortunately, there would be very few others.

lyrics

From the beaches out to the countryside

My kind of crowd is out tonight

We pour out of cages for nights in the street

And end up getting hassled by authority and police

C’mon, C’mon You Better Let the Young Live

The boulevard’s crowded and loud tonight

Pretty women to the left and right

They want you to be what they think you should be

But your not in chains at all, your free!

C’mon, C’mon You Better Let the Young Live

They say put up curfews, close the clubs

Put limits on age, so they’re not old enough

They think maybe that we’ll then go home

But baby are you wrong!

They pressure all to follow silly rules

They lecture and preach like we’re some fools

All rules will be broken, nothing’s gonna give

It doesn’t matter what you say anymore “let’s live!”

C’mon, C’mon You Better Let the Young Live

They outlaw all dances, bar all bands

Knot their laces together, tie their hands

You’re old enough to know about it

Too young to try it out – let’s cut the bullshit now!

You better let the , you better let the, you better let the young live!

You better let the , you better let the, you better let the young live!

C’mon, C’mon You Better Let the Young Live

C’mon C’mon

about

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
