Gone [OG 1980's recording]

from Almost Night by The Palisades

/

about

I’ve always loved JD’s great opening riff, and he doubles Danny on the line to compliment the jangling open chords. I also greatly enjoy the breakdown in the third verse; and the nice line JD adds on the second half. when the song begins building again. His closing surf ending is also effectively dramatic.

It’s generally a good version of the song, but I still wince when the first chorus arrives, and I sing the first “gone” painfully way out of tune. Some cheesy delay is added to the vocal to heighten the drama of particular parts, and at times, it’s actually effective.

lyrics

Since you’ve gone

There’s been such a change

My thoughts are blurred

And my mind’s been getting strange

Trying to forget you

My friends no longer know me

Trying to forget you

Oh, he nights are long and lonely…

Since you’ve gone

I can’t find no happiness

And I swear

I can’t take this awful loneliness…

Since you’ve gone

Since you’ve gone

I’ve heard talk

You’re seeing someone new

If it makes you happy

There’s nothing I can do

Trying to forget you

My friends no longer know me

Trying to forget you

Oh the nights are long and lonely……..

Since you’ve gone (gone in a glimpse and never coming back)

Since you’ve gone

bridge

Oh I’ve been all alone

I’ve been walking the street

Cold and tired, feeling dead on my feet

Caught down and confused

I’m just wasting my time

Pouring powders and pills

I’ve been losing my my my my mind

The Palisades Hawthorne, California

Dominating the South Bay music scene for two years (1982-1983), the Palisades were from Hawthorne CA (the same home of the legendary Beach Boys). Punk, Power pop, surf music, ska! No one sounded like the Palisades in 1982 and 1983. The music they wrote and performed was the music of being young – a celebration of youth.
It was a magical time in a magical place…come on in
